After spending almost four years in jail after the accusation of murdering British exchange student, Meredith Kercher, Raffaele Sollecito is seeking $545,000 in compensation for wrongful imprisonment.
Amanda Knox, who was also accused of the same crime, and Sollecito were cleared of all charges after the 2007 alleged murder of Kercher. Knox and Sollecito were first convicted in 2009 for the death of Kercher even after explaining to a jury that they were together in Perugia at an apartment the night she was found. Kercher was found half-dressed and stabbed to death in the home that Knox and she were sharing before she was killed.

On Thursday, Sollecito’s lawyer Giulia Bongiorno told NBC News that he applied for the maximum possible amount of compensation allowed under Italian law.The compensation claim of $545,000 will be decided by a court in Tuscany and it isn’t sure when it will be under discussion.
A defense lawyer from Knox’s team, Carlo Dalla Vedova, told a reporter after their acquittal that she would too “be seeking compensation for wrongful imprisonment.”
The two were acquitted and allowed to go free in 2011 and an appeals court overturned those convictions in 2013 and got a new trial which led to a conviction, which itself was then later was also overturned.
