RadioShack’s Super Bowl commercial was one of the best to run during the prime advertising hours on Sunday evening.
For years, perhaps decades, RadioShack has been plagued by the perception that the company is behind the times. With buyers running to competitors like Best Buy and big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target for electronics, RadioShack is in desperate need of some re-branding. What better way to begin the process than to make a meta mockery of the dated store?
“The 80s called,” a RadioShack clerk says in the beginning of commercial. “They want their store back.”
Barreling through the doors of the store is a blast from 80s pop culture – gymnast Mary Lou Retton, music duo Kid ‘n Play, Chuckie from Child’s Play, Hulk Hogan, Alf and others. After ransacking the aisles for VCRs and boom boxes, the "80s" loaded up the DeLorean from Back to the Future and sped off.
The commercial ends with a vision for a new RadioShack that has a sleeker, sexier look with more current electronics – most notably Beats headphones.
“We’re using the Super Bowl as the platform to get people to rethink RadioShack,” Jennifer Warren, the company’s CMO, said in a statement. “This ad is meant to grab attention, make viewers laugh and let people know, it’s out with the old and in with the new RadioShack.”
So far, the ad seems to be doing the trick, as RadioShack’s stock surged 7% by Monday morning.
