Rachel McAdams has reportedly been offered the lead female role for the second season of HBO’s True Detective.
McAdams has long been speculated to be in the running for a part in True Detective’s sophomore season, but now it’s looking more likely than ever that The Notebook star has the role, according to Variety. Sources have apparently told the publication that McAdams was offered the part opposite Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, and that Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch is expected to join the cast as the season’s fourth lead.
Through the audition process, McAdams reportedly beat out Jessica Biel and Malin Ackerman, though Elisabeth Moss was also thought to be in the running. The delay in signing McAdams reportedly had to do with scheduling conflicts involving another project for the actress that have since been resolved. Now, she’ll supposedly be able to not only be in True Detective, but also shoot Spotlight, a film based on the Boston Globe investigation into the Catholic Church sex scandal.
In True Detective, it’s expected that McAdams will play a member of law enforcement alongside Farrell and Kitsch. Vaughn is reportedly playing the series’ antagonist, a California crime boss.
Season two of True Detective is currently being written by series’ creator Nic Pizzolatto. Based in California, it will follow three law enforcement officials as they try to solve the murder of a corrupt city manager named Ben Caspar. Fast and Furious director Justin Linn has been tapped to helm the first two episodes of the season.
