One witness called to the stand, named Jane, said that Kelly engaged in sexual activities with her when she was a minor as young as 14, and even filmed videos of the interactions. Prosecutors had even obtained videos that apparently featured Jane at the time that they showed to the jury, and were able to prove it was filmed in Kelly’s home because it was used as evidence in his 2008 child pornography trial.
Jane also claimed Kelly intimidated her to lie to a state grand jury in 2002, but the jury didn’t seem to accept that part. This star witness along with three other victims were people who provided testimony about R. Kelly’s abuse that lasted for years, protected by the staff members on his team and his incredibly high profile.
As part of her closing statement, prosecuting attorney Jeannice Appenteng said when he reached the height of his fame, “what R. Kelly wanted was to have sex with young girls.”
On top of Kelly’s existing 30 year prison sentence, each count of child pornography has a 10 year mandatory minimum sentence alone.
