Quentin Tarantino Still Plans To Retire After His 10th Feature Film

Quentin Tarantino is still trying to convince people that he really plans on stepping away from directing upon the completion of his tenth film.

Quentin Tarantino Eyes Retirement

Tarantino currently has eight films in his filmography. If his recent – and past – statements are to be believed, he’ll only helm two more films.

“I’m planning on stopping at 10. So it’ll be two more,” Tarantino told Variety.

The Kill Bill director did leave a little bit of wiggle room for the future. Tarantino, 53, believes there’s a slim possibility he’ll get back into the directors chair in his later years, should he be sufficiently moved by an idea. However, it would have be far enough removed from his body of 10 movies for it to seem like a separate entity.

“Even if at 75, if I have this other story to tell, it would still kind of work because that would make those ten. They would be there and that would be that,” Tarantino explained. “But the one he did when he was an old —-ing man, that geriatric one exists completely on its own in the old folks home and is never put in the same shelf next to the other 10. So it doesn’t contaminate the other 10.”

This is not the first time that Tarantino has defended his claim that it will just be 10 movies for him. While promoting The Hateful Eight in 2014, despite the incredulity of his frequent collaborators Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell, Tarantino maintained his 10-film notion.

“I don’t believe you should stay onstage until people are begging you to get off. I like the idea of leaving them wanting a bit more,” Tarantino told Deadline. “I do think directing is a young man’s game, and I like the idea of an umbilical cord connection from my first to my last movie. I’m not trying to ridicule anyone who thinks differently, but I want to go out while I’m still hard.”

Tarantino added, “I like that I will leave a 10-film filmography, and so I’ve got two more to go after this. It’s not etched in stone, but that is the plan. If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don’t screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career. If, later on, I come across a good movie, I won’t not do it just because I said I wouldn’t. But 10 and done, leaving them wanting more — that sounds right.”

What will Tarantino’s days consist of in retirement? “Writing plays and books, going gracefully into my tender years.”
