Quentin Tarantino Puts 'The Hateful Eight' On Hold After Script Leaks

Quentin Tarantino has announced that he will not be making The Hateful Eight his next project after the script was leaked.

The Hateful Eight, rumored to be a traditional western written and directed by Tarantino, is now scraped and will not be made any time soon. After learning that the script had leaked and circulated Hollywood, Tarantino announced that, while he won’t say he will never make the film, it certainly will not be his next project.

Tarantino Script Leaked

Tarantino reportedly showed the script to a few actors for feedback, including the recently Oscar-nominated Bruce Dern, and believes that one of the actors’ agents must have leaked the script. Tarantino says he learned of the breech when he began receiving phone calls from agents requesting meetings for their clients regarding the film – agents who had not been given the script. Details of the screenplay were also leaked online, though earlier reports falsely asserted that Tarantino favorite, Christoph Waltz, was one of the actors privy to the top-secret script.

“I’m very, very depressed. I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn’t mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people and apparently it’s gotten out today,” Tarantino told Deadline.

“I gave it to one of the producers on Django Unchained, Reggie Hudlin, and he let an agent come to his house and read it,” Tarantino revealed. “That’s a betrayal, but not crippling because the agent didn’t end up with the script. There is an ugly maliciousness to the rest of it. I gave it to three actors: Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Tim Roth. The one I know who didn’t do this is Tim Roth. One of the others let their agent read it, and that agent has now passed it on to everyone in Hollywood. I don’t know how these f–king agents work, but I’m not making this next.”

Tarantino To Publish Leaked Script

Ultimately, Tarantino believes it was either Durn or Madsen’s agent who leaked the script. In his interview with Deadline, Tarantino encouraged the reporter to name names. Clearly, Tarantino feels betrayed, and the betrayal has led him to consider publishing the script instead of making the film.

“I’m going to publish it, and that’s it for now. I give it out to six people, and if I can’t trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it. I’ll publish it. I’m done. I’ll move on to the next thing. I’ve got 10 more where that came from,” Tarantino declared.

The fact that the script has circulated Hollywood is not entirely the reason why Tarantino has decided to abandon the project. The writer/director admits that the betrayal cuts deeper than the knowledge that people can read his new screenplay on the net.

“Frankly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. I like the fact that people like my s—t, and that they go out of their way to find it and read it. But I gave it to six mother—king people,” Tarantino explained.

Tarantino fans need not be completely devastated, however, as the director said he has been toying with another idea for a script and will probably just develop that one now that The Hateful Eight has been put on hold. And audiences just might get to see The Hateful Eight eventually, as Tarantino reserves the right to change his mind at any time.

“I could totally change my mind; I own the f—king thing. But I can tell you, it’s not going to be the next thing I do. It’s my baby, and if the muse calls me later to do it, we’ll do it,” Tarantino said.

Tarantino’s latest project, Djanogo Unchained, was released in 2012. No other information is known about his next project.
