Netflix announced on Tuesday it had ordered a new series of Queer Eye, which originally aired in 2003 for five seasons.
The show followed a group of five gay men, who called themselves the “Fab Five,” and who had superior tastes in the areas of fashion, style, personal grooming, interior design, and pop culture. In each episode, the team would perform a makeover, or, as they called it, a “make-better,” on a heterosexual man. This included improving his wardrobe, redecorating his home and giving him advice on grooming, lifestyle and food.
The show was quickly met with success, and Queer Eye won an Emmy in 2004 for Outstanding Reality Program. The show was originally titled Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but was abbreviated to Queer Eye to encompass the show’s larger scope; the team later performed “make-betters” on women and homosexual men as well.
The series had ended in October 2007, in season 5. But now, Netflix is rebooting the show for its 6th season. Producers of the show, David Collins and Michael Williams, released a statement explaining their decision.
“In a time when America stands divided and the future seems uncertain, a team of five brave men will try to bring us closer together with laughter, heart, and just the right amount of moisturizer,” the producers told Entertainment Weekly.
The show, which originally starred Carson Kressley, Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas, Thom Filicia and Jai Rodriguez as the “Fab 5,” will now feature a new set of players for the team. The new team will still use their expertise on fashion, food, design, grooming, and pop culture, to “make-better” a straight guy.
The new series will consist of eight episodes, and is set to begin production in the spring.
