Queen Elizabeth apparently did not like when the police guarding her residence in Buckingham Palace snacked out of her nut bowls, according to an email read in a London court on Thursday.
The Queen’s irritation regarding the snacking habits of the police staff reached an all time high leading up to the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. Following her displeasure, a memo was sent out to the officers to refrain from consuming the nuts while on guard, reported NBC News.
Specifically, the memo asked the police to “keep their sticky fingers out.”
The memo was read to the jury at London’s Old Bailey in the criminal trial against former editors at Rupert Murdoch’s erstwhile News of the World tabloid, who’ve been charged with phone hacking among other things.
Prosecutor Andrew Edis read an email that was sent from the tabloid’s former royal editor Clive Goodman to his boss Andy Coulson. “(There is) something about the behavior of the police which has upset the Queen, who are apparently helping themselves to the nuts and the like that are left out at the Palace,” Edis read.
“The problem is the police on patrol eats the lot,” the email continued, suggesting the memo made a point of “telling them to keep their sticky fingers out.”
Goodman and Coulson, who was fired from his post as Prime Minister David Cameron’s head of communications upon hacking accusations at his former job, are also accused of paying a Royal Protections Officer for copies of the internal palace phone directories.
In addition to Goodman and Coulson are six other journalists, including Ian Edmondson, Stuart Kuttner, News International Chief Executive Rebekah Brooks and those accused of covering her tracks – her husband, personal assistant and Mark Hanna, the News International head of security.
The trial against the News of the World journalists will likely run for several months.
