It has been confirmed that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will become Queen Consort when Prince Charles is officially named king of Britain. Charles is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and is thus the heir to the throne.
Elizabeth, 95, released a statement on Saturday, the day before the 70th anniversary of her beginning her reign as Queen of England. She said it was her “sincere wish that, when the time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen consort as she continues her loyal service.” There were conflicting reports over the years as to whether Camilla would be named Queen Consort or Princess Consort, but the distinction was finally made this past weekend.
Camilla will be the first divorcée in modern history to hold the title of Queen Consort. She first attracted negative press attention when she was reportedly romantically linked to Charles while he was still married to Princess Diana. Camilla later married Charles in 2005 and has rehabilitated her image significantly over her past 17 years as a royal.
The Duchess of Cornwall is an active patron of several hospitals and charities and has used her prominent platform to advocate for osteoporosis, literacy education, and victims of rape and sexual assault survivors. In recognition of her achievements, She was also appointed as a Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth on Jan 1, 2022.
