The official release of the PlayStation 4 Slim marks the first in a trio of new PlayStation products available this Fall and holiday season. With a notable reduction in size and power consumption, the Slim is set to be the new standard for the PlayStation 4, and will replace the older model. But are its upgrades worthy of a purchase ahead of the hotly anticipated PlayStation Pro?
At just over four-and-a-half pounds—two pounds lighter than it’s predecessor—the Playstation Slim is both more compact and streamlined, with sharp corners rounding out into a matte gray plastic exterior. All these changes make the console more portable. Additional design redoes include replacing the color-changing LED strip with a light-up power button and colors indicating “On,” “Off,” and “Standby” that shine through ten discrete LED pinholes.
Performance-wise, the smaller device runs much quieter than the original, and the power consumption decrease does not affect video game playback in a noticeable way. Wireless capability has also been improved in the Slim, the console now touting 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. There are of course, noticeable elements the designers left out in this upgrade. With just 500GB hard drive space built-in, the avid gamer while likely need to expand memory space soon.
