Protesters Holding Anti-Beyonce Rally Outside NFL Headquarters

Beyoncé was not the headliner for Super Bowl 50‘s halftime show – but it’s her performance that has been dominating the press in the aftermath.

Anti-Beyoncé Rally

During her appearance at Super Bowl 50’s halftime, Beyoncé chose to sing her new black power anthem “Formation.” The song features references to southern black culture, as well as to the police brutality that young black men are disproportionately subjected to in the United States. As part of the performance on Sunday, her backup dancers were clad in attire that paid homage to the Black Panthers.

Some viewers were inflamed by Beyoncé’s political performance. One such viewer took it up on his or herself to form a group on ticket site Eventbrite, and to organize an anti-Beyoncé rally that will be held outside of NFL headquarters in New York City next week.

“Are you offended as an American that Beyoncé pulled her race-baiting stunt at the Superbowl [sic]?” reads the event announcement on Eventbrite. “Do you agree that it was a slap in the face to law enforcement? Do you agree that the Black Panthers was/is a hate group which should not be glorified?”

The announcement continues, “Come and let’s stand together. Let’s tell the NFL we don’t want hate speech & racism at the Superbowl ever again! [sic]”

The organizer, who is going by the moniker “Proud of the Blues,” updated the event to reveal that a full press release will be published on Friday. The press release will include the group’s mission statement in addition to other information.

Black Girl Rising, in response to the Proud of the Blues group, is organizing a counter protest. “When Black women affirm Blackness/Black womanhood, they are attacked and silenced,” the organizer wrote in the Eventbrite description. “This is a counter protest to a racist, historical attack on the Black Panther Party and Beyonce, plus an excuse to celebrate a very awesome song and #BlackGirlMagic moment.”

Beyonce’s critics will be clad in blue, while her supporters will be dressed in “‘Formation’ video/Super Bowl performance-inspired” attire. The rallies will be held outside the NFL’s Park Avenue offices Tuesday, Feb. 16.
