Production Companies Are Adding Inclusion Riders After Frances McDormand’s Oscars Speech

Following actress Frances McDormand‘s 2018 Oscar speech that suggested more diversity in Hollywood, many actors and production companies are working to bring the idea to reality. An inclusion rider is a clause that gives actors the ability to demand that a project has more diversity among its cast and crew.

Just last Wednesday, Michael B. Jordan asked for inclusion rider in all future projects.

Today, Paul Feig, the director of movies like Bridesmaids and the Ghostbusters shared on Twitter that he would be adopting inclusion riders for all Feigco Entertainment film and television productions from here on out.

“I feel like the people who don’t do it now and the studios and companies that don’t do it now are moving backward, not forward,” Feig told The Guardian. “It’s not that hard to do, and it’s just common sense.”

Actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have also committed to the inclusion riders. In response to Jordan’s agreement on his social media sites, Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni spoke on behalf of the actors and Pearl Street Films.

The lawyers behind the inclusion rider concept, Kalpana Kotagal and Stacy Smith, from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, shared their gratitude to the actors for taking part in the movement. “It’s great to see Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and the Pearl Street Films team using their influence to create opportunities for people from underrepresented groups to enter the industry,” they said. “The Inclusion Rider is an important tool for Hollywood, and other industries, to create workplaces that truly reflect our diverse world.”
