Clothing is a big deal among British royalty and nobility (as it almost surely is also a big deal among all cultures’ royalty and nobility). The latest example of this is the wedding of Celia McCorquodale, who got married to George Wodehouse this past Saturday, as she wore the same tiara that her aunt, the late Princess Diana, wore at her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles.
The tiara has been in the Spencer family for nearly a century. It had previously been worn by Diana’s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale (Celia’s mother) and Lady Jane Fellowes, at their respective weddings, though it had not been worn in public since Diana’s death in 1997.
Among the attendees were McCorquodale’s cousin, Prince Harry, and the new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. While wearing an Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress, Markle slipped on the grass and almost fell on the ground. Hopefully we will get to see footage of that near-disaster with wacky sound effects on the British equivalent of America’s Funniest Home Videos.
