Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, announced Monday that they have chosen to name their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
The Kensington Palace Twitter account announced the new royal baby’s name on Twitter. “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana,” read the announcement. “The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.”
When asked about how the Duke and Duchess arrived at the name, a Kensington Palace official told the BBC, “We’ll let the names speak for themselves.”
It is believed that the couple chose Charlotte, the female version of Charles, to honor Prince William’s father, Prince Charles. Charlotte, incidentally, is also the middle name of Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton. The new princess’s second and third names are in honor of her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and her late grandmother Princess Diana.
Princess Charlotte was born Saturday, May 2 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington London at 8:34 a.m. and weighed 8lb, 3oz. She is now fourth in line to the British throne, behind her brother Prince George, father and grandfather.
