Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle united on Saturday for a walkaround at Windsor Castle following Queen Elizabeth II’s September 8 death.
The couples’ reunion was notable given the ongoing tensions between the royal family and Harry and Meghan.
Harry and Meghan famously left the royal family in March 2020 after they accused both the press and members of the family of racism toward Meghan. They currently live in Santa Barbara, California.
The Prince of Wales, Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess were dressed in all black. They emotionally engaged with the attendees and appreciated flowers left for The Queen.
Prince William released his first statement since his grandmother’s passing earlier the same day on Instagram. “I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real,” he wrote. “I thank her for the kindness she showed my family and me. And I thank her on behalf of my generation for providing an example of service and dignity in public life that was from a different age, but always relevant to us all,” he concluded.
Prince Harry said in his own statement about The Queen, “She was globally admired and respected. Her unwavering grace and dignity remained true throughout her life and now her everlasting legacy.” The Prince added a direct address to his grandmother, “You are already sorely missed, not just by us, but by the world over.”
Harry and Meghan were last in Britain in June to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee that marked 70 years of her rule.
The walkaround was the first public reunion of the two couples since The Queen’s death.
Queen Elizabeth II — Britain’s longest-reigning monarch — “died peacefully” at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday. She was 96.
