Prince William and Kate Middleton made their first public appearance together since the birth of their firstborn son Prince George in July at The Ring O’Fire Anglesey Coastal Ultra Marathon on Friday.

The Duke and Duchess showed up – much to the marathoners surprise – to kick off the race. While Kate joined in with the crowd of spectators in counting down from 10, her husband rang the starting bell. As the runners took off, William shouted, “The circus is off!”

Race director James Bingham was thrilled to have the young royal couple at the event, which is only in its second year. Will and Kate elected to participate in the marathon’s starting ceremony because they wanted to do something for the town that had been so welcoming to them during their stay, Bingham told People.

The new parents were outfitted in casual attire for the sporting event. With her brown hair in loose curls, Kate wore an olive green blazer over a patterned silk blouse with black skinny jeans. Will paired tan corduroy pants with a blue sweater over a button-down shirt.

Missing at the Anglesey Marathon was Prince George. According to Kate, who spoke amiably with the gathered crowd about motherhood and pregnancy, the 5-week-old heir to the British throne was home napping with his maternal grandmother, Carole Middleton.
