Prince
Six months after the death of Prince, singing sensations Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Jessie J appeared to honor Prince’s music in a five-hour tribute concert in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Hit songs such as “1999,” “I Feel For You,” and “Kiss” were performed at the sold-out spectacle. Jessie J had replaced Christina Aguilera who had originally planned to appear alongside Wonder and Khan, her representative said that she had come down with a “vocal illness she has been trying to shake all week.” Among the other artists in the line-up were Morris Day & The Time, Judith Hill, Liv Warfield, Tori Kelly and Doug E. Fresh. John Meyer and Anita Baker were scheduled to perform but end up canceling.
Mayor Chris Coleman declared October 13 Prince Day, and President Barack Obama delivered a taped message. The tribute concert was a memorial to the life of the superstar, who died at the age of 57 in April. Tyka Nelson, Prince’s sister, believes that there will be future concerts in honor of her brother’s fans. With over 20,000 people attending, it’s likely that this will not be the last tribute to Prince.
“I want them to get some closure. It takes time to kind of get over it, and I see that they are grief-stricken,” Tyka told The Washington Post.
