Prince Harry Tears Up In Court Testifying Against U.K. Tabloid Newspapers

Prince Harry choked up while in court discussing his lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers in London Court.

The Duke is suing them for hacking his phone and using illicit methods to gather information on him between 1996 and 2009.

He was on the stand for about eight hours and later responded to questions by his lawyer explaining that “it is a lot.”

He continued on, “For my whole life, the press misled me, covered up the wrongdoing, and sitting here in court knowing that the evidence in front of them and for Mr. Green to suggest I’m speculating… I’m not sure what to say about that.”

Andrew Green KC, who is the barrister for the Mirror Group Newspapers, questioned the Duke during court on Tuesday. He has been known to be a “beast in court.”

During the trial, he asked Harry many questions based on specific information about his phone being hacked. This included the question, “If the court were to find no evidence of phone hacking, would he be relieved or disappointed?”

Harry retorted, “That would be speculating – I am not sure if I would be relieved or disappointed.”

Harry believes that the hacking occurred by three different papers and that it occurred at an  “industrial scale.”

Green questioned Harry for eight hours and at first Harry seemed nervous, but as time went on he became more confident in his answers. At times the questioning between the two men got heated, with Harry arguing back at the lawyer.

During the trial, the Duke recounted how it was suspicious how photographers were waiting for him and people that were affiliated with him when he did not publicly speak about his whereabouts. One specific incident was with his ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy when he dropped her off nearby Kensington High Street. He told Green, “This to me was incredibly suspicious. I was dropping her off as close to Kensington High Street without being spotted by members of the public.” He continued on, “To know a photographer was there just waiting was highly suspicious.”

David Sherborne, Harry’s lawyer, also questioned Harry at the end of his testimony in the trial, which was Wednesday. After that Jane Kerr, who was the former Daily Mirror royal editor, was questioned by Sherborne about the articles she had written about Harry.

Mirror Group Newspapers is denying most of the claims against them. There was one occurrence where they did apologize for their actions. About 20 years ago they hired a private investigator to gather information about Harry when he was at a nightclub in London. They used the information from the investigator in an article they wrote about him.

Harry has been known to speak out against the tabloids, especially after the death of his mother, Princess Diana. He has also spoken about protecting his wife, Meghan Markle, from the same fate.

It has been 130 years since the last senior royal has been questioned in a courtroom. The last time this occurred was in the 19th century when King Edward VII was questioned about a game of baccarat.

The trial started on May 10 and will take about three more weeks, seven in total.
