In a recent trip to the U.K., Prince Harry made an emotional stop at Althorp House, the childhood home of Princess Diana, his late mother.
The Duke of Essex stayed with his uncle, Charles Spencer, at the estate after his uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, died. The property now belongs to Spencer, Diana’s younger brother.
While visiting Althorp, Harry attended his uncle’s funeral, where he made a joint appearance with his brother, Prince William. This has been a rare occurrence for the pair, and reportedly, they kept their distance during the services.
Harry’s choice to stay at Althorp was significant – not only because it was his mother’s childhood home, but it was also the final resting place of Diana. The memorial service for Fellowes was attended on August 29, two days before Diana’s death anniversary on August 31. At 36, Diana’s death was caused by a car crash that occurred in Paris.
Following Princess Diana’s death anniversary, Charles paid tribute to his late sister by taking to Twitter to post an array of old photos and newspaper clippings. The assemblage included pictures of Diana’s christening and one of her playing outside as a child.
In September 2022, Harry brought Meghan Markle to Althorp, where he visited his mother’s grave. He wrote in his autobiography Spare, “No visit to this place was ever easy, but this one…Twenty-fifth anniversary. And Meg’s first time. At long last, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet Mum.”
Since stepping back from his royal duties, Harry has struggled in his California life with high turnover among the staff at his foundation.
