Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s new Netflix documentary series, Polo, has been released and the overwhelming conclusion from viewers and critics is that the show is “boring.” The series was released on Dec. 10 and is the latest installment of a five-part $100 million deal with Netflix.
The reviews seemed to agree on a two out of five-star rating. As one critic put it, “Mostly boring look at a sport that very few people outside of elite circles have any particular interest in.” The series follows elite polo players, such as Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso, Louis Devaleix, Timmy Dutta, Nacho Figueras and Keko Magrini, as they prepare for the U.S. Open Polo Championship.
Both dedicated players of the sport, Harry and Markle were executive producers on the show and supposedly had a strong vision for what they wanted the series to be.
Harry, who has been playing for years, annually participates in his charity’s flagship fundraiser, the Sentebale Polo Cup. However, the showrunner, Miloš Balać, shared, “I think I spoke to them before I ever went to a polo match, and it was [Markle] who really prepped me for how wonderfully casual polo can be.”
Harry and Markle were both notably absent from the majority of the series, with Harry appearing in the opening credits, and then disappearing until episode four.
Balać shared his experience working with the couple, “They were wonderful. They were extremely hands-on…They really had a vision for trying to get polo to be accessible to a wider audience. Prince Harry knows the sport inside and out. To be able to have him as someone to bounce ideas off of and then also to get notes from… ‘Maybe if you edit it like this, the polo will just feel even more exciting. Or you got to make sure that the point is played out like this because that’s how you keep it factually accurate.'”
He continued, “To have a polo expert in-house with him was so special. I think a lot of projects have EPs that can give great notes, but it’s rare that you have someone who’s truly an expert in the subject that you are documenting.”
Harry and Meghan have been in the news often for the high turnover in staff at the various organizations they run. Meghan was called “a dictator in heels” by an employee after 18 staffers left their Achewell Productions company.
