Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced the birth of their baby daughter, Lilibet Diana on June 6. The newborn’s name has already become controversial after the BBC reported that an unnamed Palace source said the couple did not ask Queen Elizabeth II about naming their daughter after her own, personal nickname, “Lilibet.”
The couple denied this claim. A spokesperson for the couple said the queen was the first of the family to receive a call from Harry, where he expressed that he and Markle wanted to name their daughter in her honor. Had the queen not agreed, they would have named her differently.
Markle and Harry’s daughter is also named after Princess Diana. “Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales,” said the birth announcement.
There is no evidence that the newborn’s name has upset anyone in the royal family, as a statement from June 6 from the Buckingham Palace read: “The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”
The couple said in a personal message posted on their Archewell charity website that they were “blessed with the arrival of [their] daughter, Lili.”
“On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family,” the statement read.
