Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex got into a Zoom fight with his ghostwriter.
In the summer months of 2022, Prince Harry and his ghostwriter, J.R. Moehringer, got into an argument over how to end a scene that happened during the prince’s time in the military.
In an essay published in The New Yorker, Moehringer recounts his experiences as a writer, more specifically as a ghostwriter to Prince Harry.
While working on Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, Prince Harry told Moehringer of the time when he was serving in the military and was kidnapped by pretend terrorists to test his toughness on the battlefield.

These pretend terrorists hooded, starved and beat him. They also threw him against the wall and choked him, and just as if those weren’t enough for torture, the captors hurled hurtful words at him about his mother, Princess Diana.
Although Princess Diana died over 20 years before Moehringer met Prince Harry, his own mother had just died shortly before they met which “surprisingly,” he said is the reason for their chemistry.
As a ghostwriter, Moehringer wanted to include everything that happened during the pretend terrorist attack but Prince Harry wanted to stop at the part when he talked back to his attackers, which Moehringer thought unnecessary.
Prince Harry was adamant about ending the scene with his one-liner but Moehringer did not want to.
Later on, the prince finally admitted that he wanted to end it there to prove that “even after being kicked and punched and deprived of sleep and food, he had his wits about him.”
Moehringer understood but he and the prince eventually came to a higher understanding that including everything in the scene was the better path.
“Sometimes, in order to tell the truth, you simply can’t avoid hurting someone’s feelings,” Moehringer wrote in his essay.
The memoir took over two years to finish and was published in January earlier this year. It is one of the best-selling books of the last decade.
