President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump seemed to expect a warmer welcome in the UK. A source told The Sunday Times that Prince Charles and Prince William‘s refusal to meet the U.S. President “was a snub.”
On Friday, Queen Elizabeth II greeted the Trumps by herself at Windsor Castle. The “well-placed source” said the princes “simply refused to attend.” However, Downing Street and Buckingham Palace excused their absence, saying the original plan was for the Queen and only the Queen to meet the Trumps since it wasn’t a state visit.
Prince Charles reportedly spent the time attending an event honoring police while Prince William was playing in a charity polo match.
Additionally, a Whitehall official said the Trumps time with the Queen was brief, “kept to a bare minimum.” Obviously, the royal family members “were not as enthusiastic as they were when Obama came over.”
A royal commentator called their stroll at Windsor Castle awkward, appearing as if they were “wandering up and down a golf course.”
President Trump received backlash for temporarily stepping in front of the queen during the Inspection of the Guard, where she had to sidestep him. However, walking in front of the queen doesn’t break royal protocol, according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams. Nonetheless, Britons still had a field day after watching the American president momentarily walk in front of the Queen.
Good grief. 🤦🏻♀️
Queen Elizabeth pointed to the ground to show Trump where to walk and yet he still stepped and walked in front of her.
