Alan Rickman
Galaxy Quest, the 1999 sci-fi film, had been set to get a sequel. Unfortunately, says Sam Rockwell, who played Guy Fleegman in the film, revealed that production would’ve been in the works right now, if it weren’t for the tragic death of Alan Rickman.
“They were going to do a sequel on Amazon,” explained Rockwell on Chris Hardwick‘s Nerdist podcast, “We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away.”
He went on to explain that there were other scheduling issues involved, like the interference of Tim Allen‘s show and other conflicting schedules. But still, Rockwell emphasizes that it was the question of how to fill the “void of Alan Rickman” that really halted the plans.
“That’s a hard void to fill,” said Hardwick.
Rickman played an actor Alexander Dane in the film who portrays Dr. Lazarus, a starship science officer. It was one of his most beloved roles. The movie is a parody of Startrek where aliens mistake actors on a sci-fi show for the roles that they play. The classic film also starred Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell, Rainn Wilson, and Enrico Colatoni.
“It was a great cast,” said Rockwell.
