Clint Eastwood is quickly becoming as much of a legend behind the camera as he was in front of it during the first part of his career, and maybe that's why he's so good at bringing other historical legends to life in the movies he directs.
He took a fresh perspective on the events of World War II in Letters from Iwo Jima in 2006, and he transformed Morgan Freeman into Nelson Mandela in 2009's Invictus. Now he's digging through untold stories from American history for his new film, J. Edgar, based on the FBI founder and director, J. Edgar Hoover, a controversial figure portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
For his part, DiCaprio can now add Eastwood's name to a long list of acclaimed directors he's worked with, including Martin Scorsese in The Departed, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York, Sam Mendes in Revolutionary Road, and the granddaddy of them all, Steven Spielberg in Catch Me if You Can. The all-star cast of the upcoming J. Edgar includes Judi Dench, Dermot Mulroney, Armie Hammer, and Naomi Watts. It is set to hit theaters November 9, 2011.
