'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: Wren Double Crosses Hanna, Ezra Is Not The Father And The Girls Get Closer To Red Coat

Tuesday’s episode of Pretty Little Liars, "The Mirror Has Three Faces," revealed Wren (Julian Morris) as a traitor and brought the liars one step closer to Red Coat.

In a twisted and disturbing development, Mrs. DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker) offers Emily (Shay Mitchell) and her mother a place to stay after their house was destroyed by an A-designed car crash. Hanna (Ashley Benson), still completely focused on doing whatever it takes to clear her mother’s name, convinces Emily to accept Mrs. DiLaurentis’ offer, even if it does mean sleeping in their dead BFF’s bedroom (which Mrs. D has conveniently restored as a shrine to her lost daughter). Despite her clear discomfort, Emily promises Hanna she’ll go and snoop around. Now that Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray) is a strong contender for Red Coat, the girls need to find something that connects her more concretely to Ali (Sasha Pieterse).

For his part, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) managed to get a potential address for Cece in Philly, but he cautions Hanna against going too far in her search for Red Coat. In the wake of Jenna (Tammin Sursok) ending up like ‘soggy bread’ at Emily’s birthday party, Caleb is worried that Hanna could be next, and he wants her to go to her parents and the police to come clean about ‘A’ being back. Hanna refuses, and leaves Caleb alone when he says he won’t help her break into Radley to visit Mona (Janel Parrish).

So, of course, Hanna goes to the next logical person for help: Wren. What makes him trust worthy? Who knows, but Hanna thinks he’s on her side, especially when it comes to Mona. Of course, he’s not. And Mona (all knowing as always) calls him out on it during their one-on-one session. (Since when is Wren a psychiatrist? Later, he says that Radley is short staffed, but can a psychiatric hospital be so short staffed that it lets random volunteer doctors conduct psychiatric evaluations?)

Wren shows Mona a picture of a family that looks like it was torn out of a coloring book and asks her what it makes her feel. She’s less than cooperative, and, when he asks why, she tells him that she knows where his loyalties lie. Could Wren be working with Red Coat?

Based on “The Mirror Has Three Faces,” the answer is yes. When Hanna comes to Wren about Mona, he tells her that a blonde girl tried to visit Mona the night before, and, though security stopped her, she could easily come back. He promises to look into it. After talking with Hanna, Wren immediately called a mysterious person (presumably Red Coat herself) and said, ‘We have a problem.’ Later, he went to see Veronica Hastings (Lesley Fera) and convinced her that Mona is still after Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and her friends. Veronica buys it and swings into action, arranging a private, off the record meeting with Mona in Radley. Stupidly, Veronica threatens Mona against messing with her daughter, and an ‘anonymous’ tip is sent to the judge accusing Veronica of blackmailing Mona into confessing to Wilden’s murder!

The accusations are unfounded, and Veronica assured the girls that they wouldn’t negatively impact her career; however, she can’t let it taint Ashley’s (Laura Leighton) case, and has to step down as her lawyer. Hanna is, understandably, upset and storms out of Spencer’s house upon hearing the news.

As if Wren couldn’t get even more shady, he was then shown sitting on a bench in Radley, coloring in the picture he showed Mona during their session. He’s coloring the woman’s coat red! Oh, and he’s talking on the phone to a mysterious person about how he held up his end of the deal…Is he working with Red Coat or being blackmailed by her/him? Either way, we should have known that a man who would cheat on his fiancé with her high-school aged sister and then hit on said sister’s friend is bad news (not to mention the accent).

Despite Wren’s efforts to contain the situation at Radley, Toby (Keegan Allen) and Spencer managed to get some very interesting information on Rosewood’s most visited hospital: Mrs. DiLaurentis once went there to meet with Dr. Palmer (the same doctor who treated Toby’s mother before her death and told her to ‘stay away from the blonde girl’). At first, Toby and Spencer (aka ‘Soby’) think that it was Mrs. D who was the blonde patient at Radley, but it’s Emily who gets the whole story. When Ali and Cece first became friends, they loved to play pranks, dangerous ones. One involved Cece dressing in Alison’s clothing and checking herself into Radley, sending Mrs. D in a panic. According to her, the crazy duo was always pulling stunts like that, so she banned Cece from their home!

Based on that story and information Aria (Lucy Hale) found at Cece’s Philly apartment, Cece is looking more dangerous by the minute. Already in Philly to watch new boyfriend Jake (Ryan Guzman) compete in a martial arts competition, Aria went on a ‘froyo run’ to investigate the address Caleb traced from Cece’s P.O. Box. There, she meets Cece’s old roommate, who’s being kicked out after Cece disappeared and skipped out on rent. When Aria mentions Alison, the roommate gives her Cece’s sob story: Alison pulled a prank at the frat party the girls all went to that got Cece kicked out of Penn. Cece was convinced that all the girls were in on it, and swore to have her revenge.

Apparently Cece learned a lot from her friendship with Ali – like, how to be a crazy mean girl – and the two used to “trade personalities” for fun. Could Cece be the dangerous girl Toby’s mother crossed paths with in Radley? Is she really Red Coat?

Mrs. D and Emily also found a sleeping bag and soda cans in a weird crawl space in the basement. And, in perhaps the creepiest appearance by Red Coat ever, Hanna went snooping in Ali's room and didn't notice Red Coat (wearing her terrifying Ali mask) sneaking around behind her!

In a completely non-‘A’ related storyline, Ezra (Ian Harding) found out what we all knew – he’s not Malcolm’s biological father. He confronted Maggie (Larisa Oleynik), who admitted that she cheated on him one night when she was drunk in high school and had convinced herself that he was Malcolm’s father. Ezra broke down in tears, and called Aria, but she ignored his call. Granted, she was on a date with Jake…but this could mean the return of the Ezria romance drama we all know and love!

Finally, the episode ended with ‘A’ throwing Ashley’s muddy heels into the wreckage of Emily’s home. Why put them there and not just send them straight to the police? To taunt the girls? Maybe. (Also, wouldn’t the police/Emily’s mother have already gone through the destroyed Fields living room for evidence? Why were Emily’s cracked family photos still lying in the rubble?)

Next week’s all-new episode, “Bring Down the Hoe,” is the second to last episode before the summer finale! It’s going to be a doozy.

Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.
