Jenna found herself floating face down in a lake outside Emily’s surprise birthday part on last night’s Pretty Little Liars ‘Into the Deep.’
In the wake of Mona’s (Janel Parrish) confession to the police, Ashley (Laura Leighton) is granted bail…of one million dollars. Poor Hanna (Ashley Benson), just when she thought her mother was coming home, her dreams are crushed when she realizes she has no way of paying the cash needed to get her mother out from prison. In a lucky coincidence, a tearful Hanna runs into Ted (Edward Kerr), Ashley’s pastor boyfriend (or ex-boyfriend?) and she tells him about the bail. Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) has offered to sell his car to raise funds for Ashley’s bail (awwwww), but it won’t be nearly enough. After her conversation with Ted, someone anonymously pays for Ashley’s bail, and she’s released from prison, but put under house arrest. She later shows Ted her new accessory, an ankle monitor, when he shows up at her house with pie. The two share a slice, and seem to be rekindling their romance when he tells her 'not to run,' hinting that he is the one who paid her bail.
With her mom finally home, Hanna is temporarily taken out of crisis mode, while Emily (Shay Mitchell) gets thrown in. She’s thrown for a loop when her girlfriend, Paige (Lindsey Shaw), gets her an appointment with a world-renowned swim coach for her birthday. She hopes that, if Emily takes a year off to train, she can get a swimming scholarship for the next school year despite her injury. Emily gets there, and seems really excited about her meeting with the coach, until she realizes Paige didn’t tell him about her shoulder injury. The coach bluntly tells her that he wouldn’t even consider putting her back in the water for another six months, and that he doubts she’ll ever be in good enough shape to land a scholarship again. Ouch.
Right after her appointment, she tries to confront Paige at her aunt’s lake house – only, it’s not just a date at Paige’s lake house, it’s a surprise birthday party! They later make up outside by the lake, or do they breakup? Paige and Emily both have to come to terms with the fact that come fall, Paige will be moving across the country and it doesn’t look like either of the two women want to pursue a long-distance relationship.
Inside the party house, Aria (Lucy Hale) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) are trying to hatch a plan to get Jenna (Tammin Sursok) away from her girlfriend/bodyguard Shana (Aeriél Miranda) to find out who she’s so afraid of. Earlier at school, they overheard a conversation between Jenna (who, coincidentally, is losing her eyesight again…so she says) and Shana, and Jenna sounded terrified of someone getting to her. Aria and Spencer suspect that Jenna knows who ‘Red Coat’/’A’ is, and they want answers.
After Aria spots Jake (Ryan Guzman) with a tall blonde from the swim team at Emily’s party, she channels her jealousy into determination, and asks Jenna point blank who it is she’s so afraid of. Jenna refuses to spill, and walks out to get some air.
Aria has now lost Spencer, and her and Emily go outside to look for her. Who should they run into, but Jake, sans leggy blonde from earlier, and he and Aria share an awkward, and short, conversation, before Emily sees a girl’s body floating face down in the lake. She immediately runs into the water, thinking it’s Spencer.
Jake also dives in to help, and they bring the body to shore – it’s Jenna! Party-goers hear the commotion, and everybody is outside watching moments later when Jenna is taken away in an ambulance. She’s alive, but barely. At the hospital, Shana tells Spencer that Jenna is unconscious and reveals that it’s not Alison Jenna’s afraid of, it’s Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray), who we know was previously linked to the late Detective Wilden…
In other news, Toby (Keegan Allen) was off chasing some lead on his mother’s death, Caleb was desperate to persuade Hanna not to get involved in Mona’s surprise confession, and Mona checked herself into her old room at Radley.
Oh, and, the Ezra-Aria-Jake love triangle was finally realized! Yay! (or ‘Nay!’ for you Ezria fans). The episode started with Aria ogling a shirtless Jake as he got up in the morning – he slept on her couch last night, no kissing involved. He insisted they go out for a quick coffee, and, of course, just as they’re sharing an awkward latte and hug goodbye, Ezra is sitting in the coffee house with his baby mama, Maggie (Larisa Oleynik). He sees them hug, but his attention is quickly diverted to Maggie when she announces her plans to go to grad school in Seattle, and she’s taking their son, Malcolm, with her.
Things don’t look good for Ezria. By the end of the episode, Aria decides to give Jake a chance, and they make out.
Red flag alert! Ezra finished the episode talking to Spencer’s mom about finding a lawyer, but it’s pretty obvious that he’d never be able to stop Maggie from taking Malcolm away. Veronica (Lesley Fera) tells him that it will be especially difficult because he is not listed as the father on Malcolm’s birth certificate, and step one of any legal proceeding will be establishing paternity. Is it possible Ezra is not Malcolm’s father after all?
Finally, ‘Red Coat’ made a mystery appearance in the episode’s final moments. She snuck under the porch of a house that appeared to be the DiLaurentis house, but it was unclear.
Next week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars, ‘The Mirror Has Three Faces,’ airs Tuesday at 8 P.M. on ABC Family.
