“Presumed human remains” have been located after more debris from the Titan submersible was discovered.
On Wednesday, the Coast Guard released a statement detailing their next steps in the investigation.
“United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered within the wreckage at the site of the incident,” the statement read.
This contradicts a previous statement made by a Coast Guard official that it is unlikely the victim’s bodies would be recovered.
It was determined after a multi-day search and rescue that garnered international support that the five victims died on June 18 from an implosion.
Before this information was uncovered, authorities were racing against the clock as the sub only had 96 hours of oxygen available.
The Coast Guard received the debris from the implosion last Wednesday after it arrived in Canada. The wreckage was seen mangled in large chunks while being pulled ashore from the ship that recovered it.
Specialized remote-operated vehicles were utilized to locate the sub which was found a few hundred feet away from the Titanic and was 12,500 feet underwater.
The victims included prominent men – the CEO of OceanGate Stockton Rush, the French dive and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, the Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, his 19-year-old son Sulaiman Dawood and the British billionaire Hamish Harding.
OceanGate is currently under fire for the incident as it was uncovered that the Titan was severely lacking in its safety systems and design, which is believed to have caused the implosion.
James Cameron, the director of the film Titanic and an expert on the wreck, spoke about these flaws and specifically pointed out the Titan’s design issues.
“There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the Titan and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again,” the Coast Guard noted.
