President Trump Shoves Montenegro Prime Minister Dusko Markovic At NATO Summit [VIDEO]
In a video that has quickly gone viral on social media, President Donald Trump appears to push by the Prime Minister of Montenegro Dusko Markovic, in order to make it to the front of the group of NATO members. The 29 leaders were preparing to take a group photo, a tradition at the NATO summit. It was the first summit for both Trump and Markovic and the first summit held in the new NATO headquarters in Brussels.
In the video, Trump appears to grab Markovic’s shoulder and forcibly move him aside so that the U.S. president can make his way to the front of the group. Markovic, looking stunned at first, quickly smiles and pats Trump’s shoulder as a greeting. Trump does not acknowledge Markovic’s tap and steps out in front, adjusting his suit while looking around the crowd.
Others have spoken out against the apparent shove, including Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who tweeted, “You tiny, tiny, tiny little man.”
The shove came later in the day in which Trump demanded that the other members of NATO pay their fair share towards defense funding that the governing documents request they do. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump frequently called the treaty organization, “obsolete.” While he has since changed his tone, his speech indicated that he still feels that the US is one of the only countries paying their faie share of the mutual defense funding.
Sean Spicer, the White House’s press secretary, claimed that he had not seen the video of the shove when asked for a comment by reporters. He added that the photo had pre-assigned positions for each leader, suggesting that Trump was only making his way to his assigned position.
Montenegro will become the 29th member country of NATO in June despite great opposition from the Kremlin, which has historically disapproved of “Western influence” in Eastern Europe.
