President Barack Obama took the mic at the White House Fourth of July party Monday to sing “Happy Birthday” to his eldest daughter, Malia Obama.
After addressing the crowd to talk about the meaning of Independence Day and about what makes America the country that it is, Obama singled out Malia, who turned 18-years-old yesterday.
“Because it’s a job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I’ve got one last job,” Obama said. “It just so happens we celebrate our country’s birthday on the day we celebrate our oldest daughter’s birthday. So, just a quick “Happy Birthday” for Malia.”
With the help of Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monae – who had performed earlier in the night – Obama sang “Happy Birthday” to Malia, who joined her father on stage and gave him a hug.
Malia, who recently graduated from high school, plans to attend Harvard University for college. However, she has decided to take a gap year, and will not begin her studies at the Ivy League university in Cambridge, Massachusetts until September 2017.
