President Barack Obama made his last Late Show with David Letterman appearance Monday, chatting with the longtime host about retirement.
After the two talked about current hot topics in the media, including the forthcoming 2016 elections and the unrest in Baltimore, the two waded into less serious territory – what they’ll be doing in retirement. Obama, for one, hoped that he and David Letterman could get the domino tiles out.
“I was thinking you and me, we could play some dominoes together. You know, go to the local Starbucks and … swap stories,” said Obama.
Letterman deadpanned in reply, “I play dominoes; I’m pretty good.” But, Letterman also has some other plans, potentially taking the teaching job at Columbia law school that some are speculating Obama could be interested in post-presidency.
“I plan to teach law at Columbia,” Letterman joked.
Obama answered, “I’d be interested in sitting in on that class — I bet that’d be a hoot.”
Letterman noted that during a commercial break that he and Obama had a more earnest conversation about what he’ll do after leaving the White House. To Letterman’s surprise, the president doesn’t plan on taking too long of a break.
“Are you kidding me?” Letterman asked Obama. “After eight years of this, you’re only taking a month off?”
Obama’s last day in office will be Jan. 20, 2017. As for Letterman, who has hosted Obama on his show eight times, he’ll wrap up his Late Show run May 20.
