President Obama Calls Newlyweds To Apologize For Disrupting Their Wedding

President Obama called to apologize to newlyweds Natalie Heimel and Edward Mallue Jr., after the duo was forced to relocate their wedding due to the President’s golf game.

Obama’s Golf Game Forces Wedding Move

Heimel and Mallue, both Army captains, were all set to wed at Hawaii’s Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course on Sunday when they received a last minute call from the venue the night before alerting them that they would have to change their plans of marrying on the 16th hole.

“We knew there were two things that could mess up the wedding, and one was weather and the other was the President,” Heimel told MSNBC, adding, “I’m sure that his staffers didn’t tell him that there was a wedding.”

The golf course, one of the President’s favorites, reportedly warns people planning events that coincide with the President’s visits about possible changes in scheduling ahead of time. Heimel and Mallue simply moved their wedding up a hill, directly above the golf course.

President Obama Calls Couple To Apologize

“We were watching you golf,” the bride told the President when he called to apologize and congratulate them.

President Obama insisted that he had no idea he had displaced their wedding, and called to apologize just after the newlyweds exchanged vows.

“Congratulations on your wedding. I feel terrible, nobody told us… If they had just mentioned that they were going to have a wedding on the 16th hole, we would have skipped the 16th hole,” said the President.

Heimel and Mallue were nothing but gracious, laughing with the President on the phone and telling him how they met while both stationed in Germany after graduating from West Point. The President and Mallue also exchanged quips on where the Hawaii residents could possibly go on a honeymoon before the couple invited Obama to their wedding reception and open bar. The President declined, saying he did not want to intrude on their special day any further.

“You guys sound like a wonderful couple, congratulations! Sorry for the change of plans, but it sounds like you guys are going to have a great wedding, and at least you have a great story to tell… Congratulations, and thank you so much for your service,” Obama said.

Despite the negative press attracted by the story, Heimel and Mallue insisted that they were nothing short of thrilled to receive a phone call from the President, something Mallue’s sister Jamie McCarthy confirmed, saying, “We were all there, it was perfect. Made their day.
