President Barack Obama made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on the heels of his endorsement of Hillary Clinton to be the next person to take over the Oval Office.
Before sitting down for his interview with Jimmy Fallon, Obama joined the host onstage to “slow jam the news.” A one point, Tariq chimed in, “He created lots of jobs for you and me, he’s got one more left for Hillary.”
On Tuesday, it was reported that Clinton was the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. In a pre-taped video that was put out Thursday, Obama endorsed the former Secretary of State with strong statements about his belief that she is the best person to do the job. Obama told Fallon that the extended primary made Clinton an even better candidate.
“It was a healthy thing for the Democratic Party to have a contested primary and I thought that Bernie Sanders brought enormous energy and his new ideas and he pushed the party and challenged them,” he said. “I thought it made Hillary a better candidate. I think she is whip smart. She is tough and she deeply cares about working people and putting kids through school and making sure we’re growing our economy and so my hope is is that over the next couple of weeks we’re able to pull things together.”
As for the Republican side of the presidential race, Obama is less certain that their primary season produced the best candidate. Obama is hopeful, however, that the party will turn itself around.
“This country works when you have two parties that are serious and trying to solve problems,” he said. “At the end of the day, what you want is a healthy two party system, and you want the republican nominee to be somebody who could do the job if they win, and you want folks who understand the issues and where you can sit across the table from them and have a principled argument with them and still move the country forward.”
Now in the last year of his second term in office, Obama has his eye on the day that he and his family vacates the White House. After his days as president are over, he hopes to get some shut eye and then jet off on a vacation with the First Lady.
“I think it’s fair to say that [the trip] will be someplace warm, because it’s gonna be January, and then I think Michelle and I will take a break somewhere for a couple weeks, and let the girls manage for themselves,” he said. “Hopefully they’ll be ok when we get back.”
