Portlandia, the sketch-comedy brainchild of Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen with former Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein, has the distinction of being one of the sleeper hits of the year, and it has already garnered a cult following. Now the comedic duo are taking their show on the road to get the rest of the country excited — not just Portland.
Armisen and Brownstein are making six live appearances in various cities over the next month to promote the January kickoff of Portlandia's Season 2 on IFC, but the tour has already sold out, according to The Washington Post. They performed at Seattle's Showbox Theater on Wednesday, and the topic of the night was the age-old rivalry between the two Oregon cities, Seattle and Portland. "This is a real city," Brownstein said during the Seattle show, reports seattlepi.com, poking fun of her own native Portland in the spirit of the show itself, which satirizes the hipster culture of the city. "You guys have sports teams." Armisen added, "a real skyline." Brownstein one-upped with, "People work here."
Not all the banter was favorable to Seattle though. At one point, Armisen removed the beanie hat from his partner's head because he said it was "too Seattle."
The second season of Portlandia premieres on IFC on January 6. Until then, you can watch the trailer that was just released, which pokes fun at the Battlestar Galactica obsession that overtook the nation with SyFy's 2004 reboot of the 1970s series.
