Pope Francis Says His American Conservative Critics Have A ‘Suicidal Attitude’ In New Interview

Pope Francis called out “conservative critics” for having a “suicidal attitude” in a new interview. The Pope defined a conservative as someone who “clings to something and does not want to see beyond that.”

“Because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box,” the Pope told 60 Minutes.

In the past, Francis has addressed criticism from United States religious figures, even removing some people from their titles. Bishop Joseph Strickland was removed from his post in Tyler, Texas after Strickland frequently criticized the Pope online. In August 2023, Francis said the U.S. Catholic Church holds “a very strong reactionary attitude.”

Francis’ interview with Norah O’Donnell also included conversations about Ukraine, Israel, Gaza and climate change. Francis also addressed sexual abuse in the Church and his commitment to inclusivity. In January, Francis faced backlash after he defended the blessing of same-sex couples as long as it does not recognize the marriage.

“The Lord blesses everyone,” Francis stated in defense of his decision.

When questioned about his stance on global crises, such as the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas war, Francis encouraged world leaders to negotiate for peace.

“Any ‘anti’ is always bad,” the Pope stated. “You can criticize one government or another, the government of Israel, the Palestinian government. You can criticize all you want, but not ‘anti’ a people. Neither anti-Palestinian nor antisemitic. No.”

“What I can do is pray. I pray a lot for peace. And also to suggest, ‘Please, stop. Negotiate.'”
