Pope Francis Defends Same-Sex Blessings, Says ‘The Lord Can Bless Anyone’

Pope Francis ignited a controversy after allowing priests to bless same-sex couples. Since the announcement of this decision on December 18, the Pope has received both criticism and praise.

Catholic bishops in Africa have refused to implement this change. On the other hand, members of the LGBTQ community acknowledged the Pope’s decision as a step towards inclusivity in the Church.

In response to the criticism, Pope Francis expanded on his decision in a television interview with Italy’s Channel 9.

“Sometimes decisions are not accepted, but in most cases when decisions are not accepted, it is because they are not understood,” he said.

“The blessing of same-sex couples does not recognize a marriage but rather encourages those to strengthen their relationship with God,” the Pope stated. “This allows same-sex couples to be blessed without going against the traditional teachings of marriage being a union between man and woman. The Lord blesses everyone.”

His decision continues to face resistance from bishops and churches in several countries.
