Edgar Maddison Welch, otherwise known as the “Pizzagate” gunman, died after being shot by police at a traffic stop in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
On Thursday, North Carolina authorities confirmed that Welch, 36, had been shot on Jan. 4, at around 10:00, when an officer “recognized the front seat passenger as the person with the outstanding warrant for arrest.” When the two cops went to arrest Welch, he pulled out his own gun and refused to put it down, prompting the officers to fire. Welch died from injuries on Monday; the two officers were not injured. The police department assured that they would have an outside agency investigate the death to “ensure no bias” on the cops’ part.
In 2016, Welch fired a gun in a Washington D.C. pizza restaurant, driven by a baseless conspiracy theory that the restaurant, Comet Ping Pong, was a front for a child sex-trafficking ring controlled by Hillary Clinton and her inner circle. No one was injured in Welch’s attack, and he was arrested at the scene. The unfounded theory was born on the message board 4chan, stemming from hacked emails from the Democratic Party. As the theory gained traction online, it was soon labeled “Pizzagate.”
Court documents at the time dictate that Welch had surrendered to the police when he could not find evidence of the trafficking ring. In 2017, he pleaded guilty to weapons charges and was sentenced to four years in prison, also required to pay the restaurant $5,744 for property damage.
In an interview with The New York Times while in jail, Welch claimed, “[I] just wanted to do some good and went about it the wrong way.”
Welch had allegedly tried to coerce others into the attack on the restaurant, texting contacts that he was “raiding a pedo ring,” and they would sacrifice “the lives of a few for the lives of many.”
