Pioneering Comedian Phyllis Diller Dies At 95, Stars React On Twitter

Phyllis Diller, the legendary comedian who pioneered such artists as Joan Rivers and Roseanne Barr, died on Monday morning at her Los Angles home at the age of 95.

Longtime manager Mitt Suchin revealed that Diller died "peacefully in her sleep … with a smile on her face," reports USA Today. Diller, who is best known for her marathon professional relationship with Bob Hope, her guest stints on such iconic shows as The Love Boat, CHiPs and Boston Legal, her outrageous wigs, her raucous jokes about her husband, "Fang," and, of course, her signature laugh, was celebrated on Twitter after news of her death hit the Internet.

"We lost a comedy legend today. Phillis Diller was the queen of the one-liners. She was a pioneer," tweeted Ellen DeGeneres, while Whoopi Goldberg posted, "A true original has died. There was NO one like her, no 1 looked like her, sounded like her."

"I'm beyond saddened," tweeted Rivers. "We were friends — [daughter] Melissa [Rivers] and I had a wonderful time with her at lunch just a month ago. … The only tragedy is that Phyllis Diller was the last from an era that insisted a woman had to look funny in order to be funny."

Later in Diller's career, she largely turned to voice-over work, contributing to such hits as A Bug's Life, King of the Hill, Animaniacs and Family Guy.
