A historic Super Blue Blood Moon adorned the skies on January 31, melding together three celestial phenomena into one unforgettable sight. Thankfully, many photographers took pictures, meaning you can still catch a glimmer of the spectacle even if you were unable to witness the event live.
2018’s Super Blue Blood Moon was a truly rare occurrence, with a blue moon, super moon and lunar eclipse all happening simultaneously. Prior to this, the last time North Americans were able to witness a Super Blue Blood Moon was back on March 31, 1866. The last time one was visible anywhere in the world was on December 30, 1982. Only the Eastern Hemisphere was able to bear witness to the latter.
Given this knowledge, many took to social media to share their pictures of the elusive moon, often using the hashtag #SuperBlueBloodMoon.
The next Super Blue Blood Moon is expected to occur on January 31, 2037.
