Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm became an unexpected internet sensation during the 2024 Home Run Derby, not for his batting skills – but for his amused reaction to the national anthem performance.

Country singer Ingrid Andress, tasked with performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Globe Life Field, struggled to maintain pitch throughout her rendition. As Bohm stood on one of the field’s stars, cameras caught him trying to suppress a smile during particularly off-key moments.

When the broadcast zoomed in on Bohm, he ducked his head, seemingly attempting to hide his amusement. The moment quickly spread across social media platforms, with users comparing Andress’ performance to other memorable anthem mishaps, including Fergie‘s 2020 NBA All-Star Game rendition.

Despite the criticism, Andress boasts a successful music career. The 32-year-old has released two albums and earned four Grammy nominations, including nods for Best New Artist and Best Country Song in 2021. She has toured extensively, both as a headliner and supporting acts like Stevie Nicks, Keith Urban and Tim McGraw.

Andress comes from a sports background – her father, Brad Andress, spent nearly 20 years as a major league strength and conditioning coach, working with teams including the Detroit Tigers and Colorado Rockies.

The Home Run Derby itself concluded with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez narrowly defeating Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. by a single home run in the final round.
