The autopsy performed on Philip Seymour Hoffman was inconclusive and additional tests will be performed to determine official cause of death.
While it is widely believed that Hoffman, 46, died of a drug overdose, doctors are not completely sure what drugs were in his system and will be ordering a toxicology study among other tests. Hoffman was found dead Sunday, Feb. 2, in his Manhattan apartment with a needle full of heroin in his arm. Police found 50 bags of heroin in his home, as well as prescription medications. It was originally suspected that Hoffman died from using fentanyl-laced heroin, but that theory was disproven.
Hoffman had not hidden the fact that he was an addict. In fact, he recently did a short stint in rehab after a relapse in 2013 and had publicly spoken about his struggles with drug addiction following his graduation from college. Following Hoffman’s death, Aaron Sorkin, also an addict and who wrote two of Hoffman’s films, Charlie Wilson’s War and Moneyball, wrote a piece in Time magazine encouraging the public to see Hoffman as a victim of addiction, not his own stupidity or his own irresponsibility with drugs.
“We should stop implying that if he’d just taken the proper amount then everything would have been fine,” Sorkin wrote. “He didn’t die because he was partying too hard or because he was depressed – he died because he was an addict on a day of the week with a ‘y’ in it.”
Hoffman was a beloved actor both on stage and on the big screen; he won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Capote in 2006 and was nominated a total of four times. Many of his colleges and co-stars attended his private funeral on Friday, Feb. 7, including Amy Adams, Meryl Streep, Ethan Hawke and Joaquin Phoenix.
Hoffman is survived by his partner, Mimi O’Donnell and their three children, Cooper, 10, Tallulah, 7, and Willa, 5.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving,” the Hoffman family said in a statement.
