Philip Seymour Hoffman, the esteemed actor who was found dead in his New York apartment earlier this month, died as a result of an acute mixed drug intoxication.
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner Public Affairs revealed that the lethal drug combination that took Hoffman’s life included heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines (e.g. Xanax, Valium) and amphetamines (e.g. MDMA, Methamphetamine). It was also determined that Hoffman’s death was accidental.
Hoffman admitted during his film career, in which he won an Oscar for portraying Truman Capote in the eponymous film. that he struggled with heroin addiction after completing college. Since then, he’d remained clean and sober, focusing on his career and on his family with longtime partner Mimi O’Donnell.
The demons that plagued Hoffman reemerged last year, causing the actor to voluntarily check himself into rehab. At the time, Hoffman admitted that he opted to go to rehab after a prescription pill habit escalated.
