The Trump administration’s family separation policy at the border has been concerning many Americans. One of these people is Peter Fonda, an Oscar-nominated actor and younger brother of Jane Fonda, who tweeted in all caps:
“We should rip Barron Trump from his mother’s arms and put him in a cage with pedophiles and see if his mother will stand up against the giant a––hole she is married to.”
The tweet has since been deleted and Fonda released a statement apologizing for his strong words.
“I tweeted something highly inappropriate and vulgar about the president and his family in response to the devastating images I was seeing on television,” Fonda said. “Like many Americans, I am very impassioned and distraught over the situation with children separated at the border, but I went way too far. It was wrong and I should not have done it. I immediately regretted it sincerely apologize to the family for what I said and any hurt my words have caused.”
First Lady Melania Trump’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said Fonda’s tweet targeting the 12-year-old was reported to the Secret Service. Grisham also said, “The tweet is sick and irresponsible.”
Donald Trump Jr. reacted to the tweet and Sony’s reluctance to punish Fonda via Twitter.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end the family separation policy, contradicting his earlier stance that action could only be taken through Congress. Nonetheless, public outrage, including some Republicans, likely got Trump to end the policy this week.
