PETA Threatens To Send ‘Righteous Gemstones’ Creator Danny McBride ‘Monkey Poop’ For Use Of A Real Monkey In Filming Show

Animal rights activist organization PETA has slammed Danny McBride, the creator of the series The Righteous Gemstones, for featuring a real monkey in his new season.

The Max drama The Righteous Gemstones follows the Stone family, a clan of televangelists famous for their family’s extensive wealth and questionable morals. A co-dependent bunch, the characters struggle to maintain their social lives while keeping private scandals under wraps.

A capuchin monkey in question can be glimpsed briefly at the end of the trailer for the fourth season.

PETA wrote in a statement, “After seeing a trailer for The Righteous Gemstones that included a capuchin monkey, PETA primatologist Debbie Metzler appealed to creator Danny McBride to leave live primates out of the show and commit to never using wild animals in his productions again.”

In response to McBride’s alleged lack of response, PETA declared, “If the show airs with a live monkey, PETA is ready to send [McBride] a special delivery: a pile of ‘monkey poop’ for his dirty decision to exploit a real primate rather than use humane technology to create an artificial one — or dump the monkey scene altogether.”

PETA threatened, “The Craptsure is coming for Danny McBride.”

It has not been confirmed whether or not the monkey used in the series was real or CGI. The TV show previously used a CGI cow for a gruesome scene involving its demise. It also featured a real dog for a separate plotline.

Debbie Metzler is quoted in the statement saying that McBride “Has all the advanced technology at his fingertips, but he chose to further exploit a suffering monkey who should be in a rainforest, not on a TV set.”

PETA pushed people not to watch the “shameful” show,  and urged McBride to “reevaluate his crappy choices and rely on CGI and other cutting-edge tech for his future projects.”

In January, McBride announced that this would be the final season, saying, “The Lord spoke to me and said it’s time to wrap this sucker up.”

He continued, “I have loved every second of working with this team for the past eight years and there are some incredible payoffs twists and turns in store over the course of this wild final season.”

Righteous Gems season four premiered on March 9 with episodes airing weekly on Sundays on Max.
