The hashtag #BoycottPepsi is growing in virality after it was reported that the drinks company donated $15,000 to the Texas GOP after the state signed a restrictive abortion bill into law. The donation was first reported on by Popular Information, which is a newsletter dedicated to tracking donations from companies to politicians.
Along with the single $15,000 donation, the report claims that Pepsi continued to donate to the Texas GOP after the bill was enacted. The bill bans abortions in almost all cases after six weeks of pregnancy and was heavily criticized by progressives and pro-life advocates when it went into law in September.
Popular Information slammed Pepsi for having a stated goal of “empowering women in the workplace, marketplace, and community” while continuing these donations. A spokesperson for Pepsi has denied the recent donations and stated that the $15,000 donation was made in the summer of 2020.
“In the summer of 2020, we donated to both the Democratic and Republican parties in Texas to support those state conventions. No further donations have been made to either Texas state political party since 2020,” the Pepsico spokesperson said in their response.
Both Pepsi and cellular company AT&T were named in the Popular Information report. Among other payments, they pointed out that AT&T donated $30,000 to Republican House Speaker Dan Phelan, who was a key champion that pushed the bill through the State House.
