Penelope Cruz & Ricky Martin Attend ‘The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’ Premiere

The cast of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story attended the FX show’s premiere.

ASSASSINATION OF GIANNI VERSACE: AMERICAN CRIME STORY PREMIERE

Darren CrissPenelope CruzEdgar Ramirez, and Ricky Martin were present at the Hollywood premiere of the second season of Ryan Murphy‘s anthology show American Crime Story. This time, the series focuses on the murder of Gianni Versace, who was killed in 1997 by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, played in the show by Criss. Ramirez plays the slain Versace, while Martin plays Antonio D’Amico, his long-time partner.

Criss wore a dark patterned graphic blazer over black pants, Cruz a burgundy velvet gown, Ramirez in matching burgundy suit, and Martin in a navy suit with matching scarf. On Sunday, the group was together again to present an award at the Golden Globes. Each actor wore black at the time in solidarity with the Time’s Up initiative and the He for She movement.

The Versace family has found a lot of fault with the new season, claiming that is “should only be considered as a work of fiction.” They were not part of the creation of the series. A statement from the family was given through the Versace fashion house – “The Versace family has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming TV series about the death of Mr. Gianni Versace. Since Versace did not authorize the book on which it is partly based nor has it taken part in the writing of the screenplay, this TV series should only be considered as a work of fiction.”

The series is based on the 1999 book by Maureen Oath Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in US History. Studios Fox 21 Television and FX Productions responded to the Versace family’s concerns. “Like the original American Crime Story series The People Vs OJ Simpson, which was based on Jeffrey Toobin’s non-fiction bestseller The Run of His Life, FX’s follow-up The Assassination Of Gianni Versace is based on Maureen Orth’s heavily researched and authenticated non-fiction best seller Vulgar Favors which examined the true life crime spree of Andrew Cunanan. We stand by the meticulous reporting of Ms. Orth.”
