Pedro Pascal hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend, and one of his sketches took the form of a trailer where The Last of Us actor transformed yet another well-known video game into a dystopian HBO drama.
Pascal plays Mario, a now brooding figure after Bowser (Kenan Thompson) took over the Mushroom Kingdom, who attempts to transport Princess Peach (Chloe Fineman) to Rainbow Road in a Mario Kart-style go-kart with the help of his twin brother Luigi (Mikey Day).
To survive the journey, the brothers both possess shotguns loaded with red shells, items from the racing video game that home in on and strike down opponents.
The group also encounters characters like Yoshi (Bowen Yang) who proclaims, “I’m bisexual,” and a Goomba is cast as a Clicker, an infected being and enemy character from The Last of Us.
In a full-blown dramatic moment, Mario eats a power-up Mushroom despite it being “poisonous.” He tells Peach, “It makes me feel big, ok? I need to feel big.”
The fake reviews came at the end and panned the new TV show. “HBO picked the wrong show to do this with,” reads a review from Variety.
The comedic mashup of the two video game properties featured jokes that contrast the bizarre universe of Mario Kart with the gritty tone of The Last of Us.
Pascal’s actual HBO show has received widespread critical acclaim and was renewed for a second season last month.
