Pearl Jam has had to apologize for canceling a show due to “horrible timing,” because their frontman Eddie Vedder damaged his throat from singing in the extreme Europe heatwave. According to a social media post from the band, the Paris location had some “extreme circumstances,” due to the weather, and that Vedder hurt himself by singing in “heat, dust, and smoke from the fires.”

Unfortunately, Vedder was not able to treat his vocal cords in time for the Austria show despite meeting with doctors. It seems like the band will not be attempting to reschedule their Austria show, and have just canceled it while promising fans who planned to see them a refund. The band has also canceled its July 22 show in the Czech Republic.

Pearl Jam will hopefully still be playing at the Ziggo Dome July 24 & 25 in Amsterdam, but these could be in jeopardy, too, if Vedder’s vocal cords don’t bounce back.

An unexpected medical issue in your throat is annoying to just about anyone but is a huge roadblock for music artists who literally have to use their voices for days at a time to make a living. The singer and rapper Doja Cat, for example, recently had throat surgery due to an abscess that developed on her tonsil. She shared videos of the raspy voice she had in recovery and also assured fans she would be quitting vaping after this ordeal.
