Paula Deen celebrated son Jamie Deen’s 49th birthday on Friday, breaking from the trying task of attempting to hold onto her culinary empire after news broke that she admitted to using the N-word in her past.
"Looking forward to some quality family time in honor of @jamie_deen's birthday. Have a blessed birthday, son!" she tweeted on Friday. Along with the message, Deen included a link to the recipe for Jamie’s Coconut Cake.
Leading up to Friday, the celebrity cook was facing heat from the media unlike any she’s likely faced in the kitchen. Following the revelation of her use of racial slurs, Deen was dropped by a number of her partners, including Smithfiled Foods, Walmart, Target, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Sears, Caesars Entertainment and Ballantine Books. The Food Network dropped her the previous week, cutting ties after a relationship that reached back over a decade.
Jamie Deen, the eldest Deen brother, runs his mother’s restaurant The Lady & Sons in Savannah, Ga., with younger brother Bobby Deen. Jamie and Bobby previously starred in Food Network show Road Tasted before cooking couple Pat and Gina Neely succeeded them. Jamie Deen currently has his own Food Network show, Home for Dinner with Jamie Deen, which endeavors to bring back the concept of family dinners.
