Paul Bearer, the macabre WWE manager, died on Tuesday evening. He was 58.
Bearer, whose real name was William “Bill” Moody, joined the WWE in 1991 and took on wrestling greats Undertaker, Kane, Rick Rude, Vader and Mankind among others. While acting as manager he played the role of an unnerving funeral director who often carried a polished gold urn.
The cause of Moody’s death has yet to be revealed. However, the late WWE manager was known to suffer from morbid obesity, gallbladder issues and other serious health concerns, according to The Plain Dealer.
"WWE is saddened to learn of the passing of William Moody, a.k.a. Paul Bearer," the company said in a statement.
"Moody made his WWE debut in 1991 as the manager of The Undertaker and went on to become a memorable part of WWE over the course of the next 20 years. Our deepest condolences go out to Moody’s family, friends and fans."
Support from the WWE community poured out on Twitter for the sport's lost legend. “Very sad about Paul Bearer, he was a great person and one of the original boys,” Hulk Hogan wrote. “He was what made wrestling great. Much love.”
“Just found out Paul Bearer died tonight,” The Miz wrote on Twitter. “He was always so nice when I talked to him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Moody is survived by his two sons, Michael and Daniel.
